Prospect Park Yoga

Our Mission

To provide easy access to outdoor, high-quality, professional movement classes to all corners of Prospect Park. To give NYC residents more reasons to inhabit public space and be outside. To provide instructors with a living wage.

What we offer:

Quality

We have some of the best, most experienced yoga teachers on our staff. That’s because Prospect Park Yoga was founded by a yoga teacher and one of our primary missions is to treat our instructors with generosity so they can pay it forward to our students.

Reliability

If we say we’re having class, you can expect us to have class (unless you get an email from us 2 hours prior alerting you that the weather isn’t cooperating, in which case you will automatically be issued a credit). This is a yoga studio after all. We do yoga.

Convenience

We offer classes adjacent to the main entrances to Prospect Park. Classes run every day of the week. Our offerings are weather dependent and as the temperature warms, we will add additional classes to the schedule. We aim to host 30+ classes per week in April and 70+ classes per week by June.

Prospect Park Yoga is an open-air yoga studio that helps New Yorkers take advantage of public space for personal wellness. Prospect Park Yoga’s online platform and seamless booking system connects high-quality instructors and students for IRL outdoor yoga and movement classes in Prospect Park. This service makes it easy for students to find offerings that fit their schedules, and aids vetted instructors in filling their classes.

Our Locations:

  • Long Meadow via Grand Army Plaza

  • Baseball Fields via 15th Street

  • Skating Rink via Lincoln Road

  • Peristyle via Ocean Parkway

Classes are offered nearby 4 major entrances to serve all the neighborhoods. These are the general locations. Shortly before class, you will receive a notification through the app with the exact location.

Because we hold classes in public space and want to be good neighbors, we occasionally need to adjust to other activities happening in the park. That being said, we aim to host classes within a few minutes’ walk of park entrances.

If it’s helpful, you can think of these main landmarks:

    • Long Meadow via Grand Army Plaza

    • Baseball Fields via 15th Street

    • Skating Rink via Lincoln Road

    • Peristyle via Ocean Parkway/Parkside

  • If the weather is menacing, class will be canceled and you will be notified of this cancelation 2 hours prior to class. We will credit your account and you can use this credit to register for another offering on our platform. In addition, your teacher will be paid for the class that was canceled.

  • Whatever you like to use when you practice yoga! We do not provide equipment for practitioners. Some people are minimalist and bring only a towel, others like their mat, blocks, strap and other accoutrements. It’s up to you.

That being said, our minimum recommendation is that you bring a light-weight yoga mat that you use outdoors. We like to place a towel or cloth under the mat so that upon rolling it up, it stays clean.

  • Prospect Park Yoga is the brainchild of Paige Cara, a yoga instructor in Brooklyn. She has been teaching in the borough for over a decade. You may know her from studios around town, including the Park Slope Yoga Center.

During the pandemic, she was a founding member of The Connective Studio, a NYC-based cooperative enterprise offering online and outdoor movement classes. Through this co-op, she taught weekly classes in Prospect Park. These classes were beloved and well-attended but unfortunately the administration of running group classes was rather cumbersome.

Paige’s experience teaching outdoor classes informed the idea for Prospect Park Yoga; she understands first-hand the challenges, rewards and best practices involved in teaching in an open-air venue.

In addition to being a mindful-movement instructor, Paige is an enormous public space enthusiast and particularly enamored with Prospect Park. She is also committed to collaborative endeavors and providing a liveable wage to instructors.

  • Great question! No, the Prospect Park Alliance is a non-profit organization that sustains “Brooklyn’s Backyard,” working in partnership with the City of New York. The Alliance provides staff and resources that keep the park green and vibrant for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home. The Alliance cares for the woodlands and natural areas, restores the park’s buildings and landscapes, and provides free or low-cost volunteer, education and recreation programs.

Prospect Park Yoga is a separate business that operates within the park grounds but is not affiliated with the Alliance. We follow the rules and guidelines set by the Alliance and the city for private businesses operating within the park.

  • You are free to use any of the public restrooms in the park but we do recommend going before you leave the house!
